Koja Zaharia

Koja Zaharia was an Albanian nobleman and a member of the Zaharia family.

Life

In 1396 he could capture the castle of Danjë and from there he ruled the territory around it. He became an Ottoman vassal and in 1402, together with other Albanian noblemen, he fought alongside Bayezid I forces, in the Battle of Ankara.[1] In 1403 after the defeat of the Ottomans in the battle, Koja, gave up his vassalage to Ottomans and became Venice Republic vassal.[2] In the following conflict between House of Balšić and Venice Republic, he supported Venice forces.[3] Around 1412, his daughter married Balša III and in return Balša III gave him Budva to administer.[4] After the death of Balša III, Koja's daughter returned to her family in Danjë.[5] In 1422-1423 during the conflict between Stefan Lazarević and Venice Republic he supported again Venice.[6] His son Lekë Zaharia inherited his domains after his death.
